Puttu ....The Steamed Cake of Kerala

There is a long list of traditional Kerala recipes that I was waiting to share during my vacation time in Kerala…Though I am enjoying eating them daily, the pace with which I could post them is going on very slow.....as the time spent in front of the computer itself has gone down so much here…Finally today I have decided to add one recipe to wind up the posting for this year & to Welcome 2010....

Eggless Saffron Cake with Sweet Saffron Cream

Much awaited holidays have reached finally & I'm heading to God's own country for my vacation....One thing that I may miss for sure in my Kerala kitchen will be the baking sessions,  as my mom's old oven is no more in a working condition
Anyway there are loads of other things left which puts cooking to be the last one in my looooong "TO DO" list ....

Watermelon Lassi / Smoothie...A Summer Treat

Watermelon Lassi

Last day we had some visitors from US and they couldn't get the feel of Xmas in the summer heat of Australia....Even though winter is not so conspicuous in South India, I too had the same feeling during our first Xmas here; as it was hard for me to imagine a Xmas time in the scorching sun...Still summer is more preferable here than Winter times...As you can enjoy the beautiful beaches in summer only!!!

Kerala chillie chicken

There should have been a great relation between the communist state of Kerala & the communist nation China ; as can be seen from the Malayalam names used for a few things  like Wok which is known as "Cheena Chatti" & Fishing Net known as "Cheena vala"...
( Rightly pointed out in the recent Malayalam Blockbuster "Arabikadha")

Spicy Prawn Pasta

I was always reluctant to try pasta, keeping in mind the first commandment on serious eating by Michael Pollan...It says "Don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food"....!!!

Instant Carrot and Dates Pickle

I am usually very lazy when it comes to making pickles, considering the availability of them at Indian stores.
Also Mango pickle is the favourite in my home & I rarely get to see any raw mangoes in stores here....So I never used to take pain to make pickles except for the Onam Days to go with OnaSadya...

Prawn Pakoda / Fritters....

Prawn Pakoda

Last week some of my friends at my son's playgroup asked if anyone can cook some Indian food for our playgroups's morning tea session..I got to know that they all are great lovers of Indian food......

So I didn't have to give a second thought before volunteering , as it is always great pleasure to cook for my friends...

Vegetable Pulao

Vegetable Puloa

Being from Kerala, we are used to having rice for our daily lunch accompanied by fish (curry or fry or even both :) ) , a veg curry (1 among these are the options .....rasam , sambar, parippu, pulicherry, theeyal etc) and 1 dry vegetable dish (like thoran or mezhukkupuratti).

I always used to think why to make soooooo many side dishes to have rice.... Instead why cant we put all veggeies together and cook....

Sticky Date Pudding with Caramel Sauce

Sticky Dates Pudding

Baking is one of my favorites among the various cooking tricks. Thanks to mom ( as usual ) for teaching me the basics in this too. Previously,  the only cakes I used to try out were the simple vanilla and chocolate cakes. After coming here, I could find a lot of different varieties of cakes and muffins in the shops that make me tempted to try them out at home.

Egg / Eggless Fried Rice

Typical Kerala Lunch ( ഊണ് ) with rice and fish is what we prefer for lunch daily. I feel greatly relieved if some fish is there, as I found fish recipes to be easier than the veggies. Anyways we cant get fish daily!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kerala Appam (Hoppers) ... A coconut-less version

Appam
Appam is one of the favourite breakfast items in Kerala, made from rice.

It makes great combinations like "Appam & chicken curry", "Appam & Egg roast", "Appam & Veg stu" or even the simple "Appam & coconut chutney".

Panchamrutham / My First Offering......

Panchamrutham
Panchamrutham

Panchamrutham is a sweet offering made to God during Puja (worship) in Hindu temples ; the name translates to "Pancha" (Five),"Amruth"(Nectar) ie FIVE NECTARs . From Hindu Mythology Nectar (Amruth ) is a divine food of Gods which gives them Immortality (Amarathwam). Panchamrutham can be thus considered  as the nectar of immortality. I am sure if you ever had Panchamrutham in your life, its divine taste will be still immortal in your taste buds.
